“May all our actions, words, thoughts, and spirit be centered in God, on God, and for God!”

St. Jane de Chantal

Contemplative Ministry

With great fidelity, Oblates who have retired from their ministry in parishes and schools have a very important ministry of prayer. This commitment to contemplative ministry begins in seminary formation and continues through retirement.

Our contemplative spirit is traced to our patrons St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal, who founded the Order of the Visitation. The Visitation Sisters are a contemplative group of women who pray throughout the day for the Church and the world.

In the 19th century, this contemplative tradition was shared with the Oblates by a Visitation sister, Mother Mary de Sales Chappuis. This prayer and contemplation became central to the Oblate identity and has helped us grow as a community. From the beginning of their religious life, Oblates are trained in contemplation through daily prayer, meditation, and liturgy.

All Oblates are devoted to meditation and active ministry (service) in their daily lives. When Oblates retire, contemplation and prayer become their primary work. This ministry of prayer takes place in parish or school settings and our retirement community at Childs, MD. Wherever our senior Oblates reside, they hold you in prayer.

Contemplative Core of the Oblates

Oblates and Sisters of the Visitation

Rooted in Contemplation

The Sisters of the Visitation of Holy Mary were founded by our patrons, St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal as a contemplative order. Learning from the Visitation Sisters, we shape our daily lives focused on prayer and contemplation.  Each Oblate offers his actions, his work, his life, to God each day.   The contemplative core that was handed on to us by the Visitation, directs our hearts and our lives to Jesus, our greatest teacher.

Being contemplative does not mean breaking away from the world, but embracing the world with love and patience. The Oblate extends the Kingdom of God not only in his ministry and service, but in the way he lives his very life.   Through prayer and action, he becomes an oblation (an offering) to God.

“The Lord is my strength and shield; my heart has trusted in Him and I am helped. He is not only with me, but in me and I in Him."
