Pope Francis and St. Francis de Sales

The Pope was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome last Friday after a long battle with bronchitis at home. We keep him in our prayers and reflect on his connection to and reflections on the teachings of St. Francis de Sales.

We pray:

O God, shepherd and ruler of all the faithful, look favorably on your servant Francis, whom you have set at the head of your Church as her shepherd;

Grant, we pray, that by word and example he may be of service to those over whom he presides so that, together with the flock entrusted to his care, he may come to everlasting life.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen

In 2024, Pope Francis Issues Fourth Encyclical Dilexit nos (“He loved us”) in which he celebrates the gentle Heart of Jesus. He draws upon the teaching and example of St. Francis de Sales and St. Margaret Mary Alcoque, VHM, the Disciple of the Sacred Heart. The button below provides an excerpt from Dilexit nos in which Pope Francis cites the teachings of St. Francis de Sales.

On December 28, 2022 the 400th Anniversary of the death of Saint Francis de Sales, Pope Francis issued his Apostolic Letter, Totum Amoris Est ("Everything Pertains To Love"), in which the Holy Father reminds us that the spirit of Charity cultivated by Saint Francis de Sales is now entrusted to us.

In 2022, Pope Francis also invites us to spend Christmas with St. Francis de Sales. Read his remarks in his General Audience on December 28th, the 400th Anniversary of the death of St. Francis de Sales.
