Lessons in Patience

St. Jane de Chantal

“My very dear daughters, always strive for that loving union of hearts which brings about a holy peace and the kind of blessing we should desire to have in this house of God.” - St. Jane de Chantal

The above encouraging words written to 17th century Visitandines are applicable far beyond that century and to all persons, both daughters and sons.

A "loving union of hearts," the reality of persons living out the desire God has that we "love one another as I have loved you," is a daily challenge that can "bring about a holy peace," especially if there is a need for forgiveness and it is both offered and accepted.

The temptation to discouragement is a heavy burden in addition to ordinary problems. One of the quotations from St. Jane de Chantal that has special meaning in this regard is that she asks that we pray for "patient endurance" and she gives examples that require it day to day. The hoped and prayed for result she offers is "a holy peace."

St. Jane was asked by God for the patient endurance she recommends. Her husband was killed in a hunting accident, and to safeguard the inheritance of their four children, she moved to the estate of her father-in-law, a less than desirable situation. By the time of her death, two of her daughters had died and her son had been killed in battle.

To each person receiving this message, happy Feast of St. Jane de Chantal! You are remembered in our prayers!
